What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise protocol that was invented by a German physical trainer, Joseph Pilates, early in the 20th Century.  He originally called it Contrology, because it helped control and unify the body, but it was renamed Pilates in his honor after his death.

Pilates is a leader-led activity (the instructor cues the student through a series of exercises/movements) using a variety of pieces of equipment - the signature piece being the Reformer.

Pilates embraces 6 core principles:

BREATHING - deep breathing enables optimal movement.

MIND-BODY CONNECTION - becoming fully aware of what your body is doing, how it's doing it, and how you feel doing it.

CENTERING - getting connected with your "powerhouse" - your core.

CONTROL - establishing and maintaining control through a movement

PRECISION - the little details matter, which is why Pilates is a cued practice, so we can help you tune in to the specifics

FLOW - moving easily and smoothly through an exercise, and from one exercise to another

Pilates Practice on a Reformer

Why Practice Pilates?

So you can live your best life!

To feel more comfortable in your body.
To be strong.
So you can move gracefully.
So you can improve your posture, standing tall.
To keep you safe on your feet.

..... and to pamper yourself, because you are worth it!

Pilates will help you.....

1. INCREASE YOUR FLEXIBILITY

Muscles, tendons and ligaments work better when they are long and supple. You'll develop a wider range of motion, move and flow more freely, and avoid injury.  Bending over to clip your toenails, pick something up off the floor, weed a flower bed, reach for the box on the top shelf, play with a grandchild and more will more likely be done with grace and ease.

2. STRENGTHEN YOUR CORE

By strengthening the deep muscles of your abdomen, back and pelvic floor, you will optimize your biomechanics and functional strength. When your core is strong, your body is better supported and other muscles and joints can do their job more efficiently - allowing you to remain active and less injury prone.

3. IMPROVE YOUR POSTURE

Kyphosis, a tight back, stubborn hamstrings and more all contribute to postural issues.  A consistent Pilates practice will alleviate these conditions, enabling you to stand proud and tall (and as a bonus alleviate that aching neck/back!)

4. BECOME MORE MINDFULLY CONNECTED WITH YOUR BODY

Learn how to move with deliberation and intention, tuning in to how your body feels and responds, while cleansing your mind of distraction. You'll reduce stress and deepen your self awareness, which in turn will benefit other aspects of your health and well-being.

5. LOWER YOUR CHANCES OF FALLING

Aging, our jobs, asymmetrical sports, hobbies and day-to-day habits create muscle imbalances that can, if not checked, progress to restricted and painful movement, making it hard for us to balance ourselves and increasing the probability of falling. Pilates helps you find these anomalies and distortions so you can bring yourself back into alignment, and then move with grace, comfort so you can stay on your feet!

6. ASSIST IN RECOVERY AFTER AN INJURY

A safe, focused exercise plan can be just what the doctor ordered after an injury or surgery. Transitioning to Pilates when a formal Physical Therapy program ends enables you to maintain and/or build on all you have accomplished during your recovery.

Class Themes

Private, 1:1 classes are designed to accommodate different needs.

You can select from one of the following themes for each of your sessions, or the instructor will pick one based on your overall fitness/wellness objectives.  Once selected, the instructor prepares a unique 1 hour program around that theme.  Even if you stick to a favorite theme, every class will be programmed differently, keeping things fun and interesting!

To achieve tangible progress and feel results, it is recommended you do a minimum of 2 classes per week.

Joseph Pilates famously stated; “In 10 sessions you will feel a difference, in 20 sessions you will see a difference, in 30 sessions you will have a whole new body,” - Joseph Pilates. But, let me gently remind you that results aren't a one-size fits all approach – everyone is different.
